For those who use a dog kennel for a coop, I'd love to see pictures...

Hello There...

I am new here, but have lurked off and on for years. I have a coop that we converted from dog run panels, old chain link fencing, and an old playhouse. All materials were either on our property, or from either neighbor on both sides, oddly enough.

It housed our 4 hens a few years ago, but I have since started a new flock at a ranch I lease down the road a few blocks.

The front of this coop is the one kennel panel with a gate, the sides and back are of chain link and metal posts salvaged from the neighbors who wanted to chain link gone from their yard (score!) My husband put plywood over the top to provide shade and protection. We did have raccoons visit once and try and take one of our hens, but it was because we left the gate open at night and that bagger climbed into the henhouse. Thankfully, she lived through that ordeal. Other than that, since the henhouse (playhouse) door has a latch, and there is hardware cloth over the window openings, no other raccoon problems. There is chicken wire around the bottom of the chain link to prevent raccoons from grabbing the chickens through the chain link fence.

Inside, there was a shelf for the nest boxes, a closet rod roost, and a divider curtain to separate the roosting area from the feed storage area. The floor is linoleum tiles with pine shavings spread out. I used to keep a bale of alfalfa to toss them a flake now and then to scratch around in, but they would sneak past the curtain (bedsheet+clothespins) and sometimes lay their eggs on top of the bale.

I decided to come on here because I currently have a problem with my new Marans eating eggs. I have 3 Ameracaunas who have been laying beautifully, and introduced 4 cuckoo Marans this year, and the egg eating started when the Marans got about 3 months old. They are now about 5 months, and have started to lay too, but someone is eating those eggs as well. I used to have a nice little side business at work selling eggs, but I can't collect any lately, due to this egg eating problem.

Rather than get rid of my Marans, I am looking to build a roll out nest box and perhaps this will keep them from eating the eggs, and also prevent any rodents from getting them as well. I'm still not sure it isn't the new hens plus squirrels or rats getting the eggs. I figure building a roll out box is cheaper than video surveillance...!!!

I've seen some really neat dog panel chicken coop ideas on here. Thanks to all who posted pictures!

My new chain link dog /pens are almost done, except for putting up hardware cloth/chicken wire, and some sort of roof (so really, still LOTS of work do do). I figure hardware cloth for the bottom 2', then maybe chicken wire up to the top, and then either hardware cloth or clear corrugated plastic for the roof? Will the chicken wire higher up keep out weasels, minks, possums, etc? I was going to start a new thread to avoid hijacking, but the information seems to fit in here.

BUT... what do you do with the gap between the chain link where the gate opens? Our has a good size gap at the gate. How do predator proof that area? We plan on putting a roof on the top, wraping hardward cloth around the kennel but we're stumped as to how to keep the coons from reaching into get my girls.

We have attached a piece of hardware cloth or aluminum mesh to one side of the gate that basically covers the gap. You can still open/close the door, but the gap is covered by the extra material. It's not the best solution, by any means, but it works. You just need to make the extra piece wide enough so that it covers the gap when the door is closed.

We use a gated dog run and put the coop inside and on stilts so that the chickens could utilize the space under it. The only change I've made since the picture was taken is that I've added a tarp over the top. We don't need the tarp for shade since the coop is under trees but very much need it to keep rain out. No one likes a muddy run!

Here are three small grow out runs that are next to my bigger run. They have direct access to the grassy area they get to go out and play in, and I can let out groups separately, easy to shoo them in after the run is clean, then the next group out, rake, clean and fill waterers, fill feed, on to the next run. I put two of these dish pan type waterers for each pen. One is inside that they can walk in and cool their feet and get as messy as they want, and clean water outside the coop and they have to put their heads through the wire to drink and it stays a lot cleaner. Because of the angle of the sun and everything, their outside waterers are in the shad most of the day. Plus I just like having a spare water source in case they poop in theirs or knock it over when I am gone. This picture was taken at nearly noon, and the outside pans are in the shade still even in summer. You never know with chickens and I don't want to worry about them so I give them extras.

I actually have two of these set ups. Right now I have shade cloth on top, but in the fall I will steal the PVC tunnel idea for a roof that will deflect rain and snow. Rain being the bigger issue here.

Pix of my dog kennel run at my BYC page (see link below in sig). I got a building off Craigslist to use as a henhouse (kennel was found on C's list, too).
