Creek Sand. Most outdoor landscaping supply companys will have it. You know, those that sell topsoil, mulch, gravel, etc. It costs me $14 a scoop which is a half a ton and will fill up my Mazda pickup bed. For my 18'x21' run (an old carport I converted) I bought five tons and that gave me a 3" base for my gals to keep their toes dry. That was about $110 and it included the delivery since it was less than ten miles. In the spring I'll probably remove about half of it and put it on my garden and bring in a couple of tons or so to replace it. I use a hoe and dig down deep to stir it up real well every few days which keeps the surface clean and brings up worms, etc. that my hens love. Since it's sand it's easy to work up like that. The girls follow me around now when they see I have the hoe in my hand.
