We have a big forest fire in our area. For the last week we have been on edge. Car packed. My chickens are still in their pen it is 100'x100' and no plants just rock/dirt in their area, coop is in the center of the 100'x100'. The coop has a metal roof. We do have trees on the property, but not by a big forest. Because we may have to evacuate still, I gave away my younger chicks, and brought 1/2 of my flock to friends, some to keep, some to get later.

I have really given second thought to my chicken math in all this and decided smaller flock is better, and I am ready to sell the incubator I just bought. My husband wants me to have no chickens, but I just cannot go "cold turkey."

Anyhow, I just thought I might mention this to my former self. Don't go bananas chicken wise. Wish me luck!

Yep, main reason my family is cutting down on chickens. We have 25 right now, but are looking to get 15-20 MAX.
