Foul Smelling Head, Some Nasal Discharge

Thank you...I have not decided what to do yet. I have 27 birds and I figure if she has something contagious someone just has to have caught it. I am going to keep an eye on everyone tomorrow and the next day and if no one is sick i will probably have to cull her with the assumption that it didnt pass on to anyone. If other birds do start to get sick then i will know its already spread and i will have to treat immediately. thanks for the advice on medicine, Thursday morning is the earliest i can make it to the feed store so i really hope nothing gets worse before then.

Just an FYI..most contagious illnesses take 7 - 14 days from exposure to symptoms...so, you could be looking at another 14 days to wait. Until then, if you treat, you might be able to cut down on the amount of contagion being produced and save your chicken.

Sorry, I've just been dying to use that little guy :) But, seriously, it wouldn't hurt to treat until you found out if it has spread.

Okay so I do have some kind of update that might help us pinpoint what this is.

I was talking to my roommate about her and he mentioned that she sneezed on him last week and got mucus all over his arm. That means she has been ill for at least a week now and in with the other 26 birds. None of the others are showing symptoms. I feel as though if she has been sick for a week the probability of all 26 other being able to not show anything by now is really improbable. (although we will keep an eye on them still). Also I noticed that when she breathes through her mouth she seems fine, but gets choked up when she tries to breathe through her nostrils. Kind of leads me to believe its more an infection in her head than her lungs. Thoughts? She is still not showing any swelling or discharge in the eyes.

You are probably sick of my opinions..but, here goes.

She could have an allergy. I've had a couple chickens who have had allergies. It comes and goes with whatever pollen is bothering them. I treated them anyway. If it's one of my kids or my animals, I treat everything immediately...for me? I wait until I have to drag myself to the dr.

I am really relying on your opinions here! I am going to the feed store after work today so I am going to take care of my girl. Would allergies cause an infection? I definitely recognize the smell coming from her nose as that of an infection

I think, what starts out as an allergy can lead to infection once the nasal passages are inflammed. I know that everyone says how contagious respiratory problems are and how they remain carriers but, I had several chicks exhibit really bad respiratory problems. I treated them with Duramycin and I have had about 50 chicks since and not one of them or, any others have ever shown any symptoms. Treat your girl and see what happens!
