Our chickens started laying 8/21, one at first and another started yesterday.

There have been a couple of days that yielded no eggs and I figured, well that's probably normal, they just started.

My 11 year old found a nest today with 5 eggs in. Apparently the days we didn't find them, they laid them in their own nest.

It hasn't been overwhelmingly hot, but I'm assuming these eggs aren't safe to eat? Right?

Thank you!

I would not eat them, no. I am more concerned about condensation and water than heat, but heat is also a concern. Any water or morning dew will remove the bloom on the egg. At that point the eggs must be refrigerated or bacteria can enter the shell. I would begin to practice keeping them in the run until after their normal laying time. That will get them accustomed to only laying in the coop. Watch them and listen to know when their laying time is. For mine it’s about noon.

Disregard. The cat knocked them off the counter anyway. Thank you!!

But at least now I know for the future. I don't "let them" out of the run, the little stinkers get out! We are working on reinforcing it but it's a work in progress.

I would have never thought of the bloom! It was the heat that concerned me, so thank you very much for bringing that up!
