We were on the way shopping this am and went down a country lane about 4 miles from our house. As we were about half way down the road I cought a glimps of something on the side of the road and said to DH OMG I think thats a chicken!! Usually all we see down there are wild birds like Pheasents and grouse and lots of foxes. We initially went past her and Dh said he thought it was a young Pheasent but then I said NO it looks like a Silkie ???? I cought a glimps of that funny head feathering they have. It was pouring down with rain so really it could have been anything - it looked just dark! DH reversed the car and it did look like a chicken! I got out and Dh took the car past her again so we were both on either side of her and we chased her into the hedge because there was a fence there and we knew she could not escape once caught in the bushes.
OMG She is a Chicken - but what kind and why out in the middle of nowhere??? We stopped at the nearest cottage and banged the door but no one was home and there was no sign of chickens in their yard. We did stop at a few more houses but could not see signs of anyone having chickens and they were another half mile up the road. So maybe she got lifted by a fox and got away.
We put her into my shopping bag and then once we got a box into that. She was soaking wet and freezing cold. We left her in the car whle we did the shopping etc so she has had a few hours to calm down in the dark and warmth of the car.
Now we are home we have had a chance to look at her a bit but not much as she is terrified. She kind of looks like a dark Silkie type as she has feathered feet and I think her head will feather up once she is dry but she has lost a lot of feathers and it does look like something got her by the wings. They are not broken and there doesn;t seem any blood but she looks like something plucked her good! Very cold and desheveled and frightened. She is now in the cat box in the shed where it is quiet. I showed her the other chickens on her way in so she knows there are chickens here. I have given her just plain water at the moment and when I put some chicken feed in she went mad for it - she is starving hungry.
I hope she will be ok - she seems a might smaller than our 12 week Maran pullets? She may be about 10 weeks old or even a banty? I have no idea what she is or where she came from - it is fields and woods for miles where we found her.
We will try to get a photo when she is a bit more settled and less stressed out. She is very small and thin. Once we get a photo perhaps someone will know what she is??????
