Little thing wondered up in to my yard last night covered in blood. Its not quiet old enough to have all its feathers in but it looks as if someone attempted to cut his wings and they butchered it. I'm not quiet sure what to do to help the little thing out other than give it a safe place to heal. Its only its right wing but it still tries to use it so I don't think its broken but I'm no pro here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry! If you have a vet that might take a look at this duckling, that is what I would do. But for now, you will want to get him under a heat lamp. Injured birds get very cold or shocky. And the shock can kill them faster than the injury. If he is still bleeding, you can powder up the area with cornstarch. That will stop the bleeding. In a pinch you can use flour as well but it is not as effective as cornstarch.

As long as it is not broken, or bones sticking out, he will probably heal. Birds have incredible powers of healing if they get enough supportive care.

You can also post this question in our Duck section here on BYC to talk to all those Duck experts on how to further care for this baby....

But for now, keep him around 90 degrees for a few days. You will need to continue brooding him under heat until he gets his feathers and you can get all the info you need in the duck section.

Good luck with your baby and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the ducking, kind of you to try to help it. TwoCrows gave you some great advice on how to help it, you might also post in the Emergencies section about its wounds and how to treat them, pictures might help. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures It could also have been subject to a predator attack, so check its body over carefully for bites or puncture marks.

That duckling was lucky someone like you found him/her
and is willing to give some care ...

1. A worm place to heal as injured animals are using the
everything to heal not to worm the body...

2. A hard boiled egg shell removed and egg mashed up
really fine and served as the egg has everything the
little duckling needs one or tow of these a day for a
week will make all the difference ...

3. have plenty of clean water for the little guy .....

Do check for puncture wounds - and keep a close eye on ducky to see that his wing, etc. doesn't get infected. If you are in a warm climate - be sure that flies do not lay eggs in his wounds. Maggots are much worse than the original problems.

When the bleeding stops, you could cleanse him with some saline solution.

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! Glad to have you here! I hope the duckling gets better soon. Do you have pictures?
