Found a stray dog- what kind? *UPDATE*

I'm seeing Heeler, Shepherd, and maybe a drop of Pittie.

I agree, you should look for a microchip, as well as make a good effort to find the owner. I know that if I lost my dog, I would hope who ever found him would make a good effort to find me, instead of adopting him out immediately. Granted, I would be all over town looking for my dog. He's a real cutie!

So would I. But I might not necessarily think to be all over town three counties over looking for my dog, and dogs can roam amazingly far. Or what if, God forbid, he got lost while we were out hiking in an unfamiliar area, or moving across the country! That's why my pets are microchipped, not for the rare occasion when they get loose in the neighborhood but just in case they happen to be lost far far away from home.

just because he is un-neutered does not mean he isn't cared for. Some people do not agree with altering a dog...he seems to be well socialized. I wouldn't discount that he has a loving home....I would look for two weeks, and if I couldn't find his owner, then I would try to find a home for him...

x2 a lot of men refuse to neuter their dogs!

Which may be the reason he is no longer with his people. Un-neutered dogs roam.

That's true. However he is a puppy- they may not have neutered him yet, or maybe he's just uncared for. We go where we found him very often- probably every other day, and have seen no trace of him before. We've also been taking him on walks back over there and there is nobody searching for him in the area. And yes, I'm aware that it doesn't mean he isn't cared for. We're trying to find his home- found dog posters, craiglist adds, petfinder...ect. Our family can't really foster him while we look for his home because of our chickens, but I think our friend is going to take him to and if somebody calls or we somehow find his home- that would be awesome! But if not, I think they're going to keep him. He'd have a great home there!
He is such a sweet dog, and pretty, so I would think someone would be searching for him. But at the same time nobody has called. Maybe he is from three counties away. I'd be searching all over the place if I were his owner!

Some people don't have time to be searching all over the place. You may have just missed the owner on your walks. I have a friend who's dog was gone for 3 weeks before he actually found him. He did what he could to find the dog. But, what does a person do? Drive around aimlessly? NO, they call local clinics, the local animal shelters, they place ads (if they can afford it) in local papers. Just because he is un-neutered does not mean he is unloved! I agree with neutering 110% but, I have also learned not to judge those who make an educated decision not to.

I do now know the law where you live. Where I live Only the Humane Society has the legal right to transfer ownership of a domesticated animal without owner consent. But, if you can prove you have made "every effort" to find the legal owner then, after 30days, the animal is considered yours.

It is find if your friend fosters him, even with the intent of keeping him. But IMO you have a moral obligation to exhaust every avenue of finding the legal owner before your friend decides this dog is theirs.

I didn't mean to imply that because he is un-neutered that he is not loved. Just stating a fact that un-neutered males roam more. I hope his family finds him, or that someone else will take him and love him.

I hope so too! If not though, he currently has a great home :)

Did you try craigslist or your local papers to see if anyone lost a dog? I found one, and posted flyers around town and on craigslist to let people know we found their dog. I kept a beagle for a week before the owners saw my flyer and came and got their dog. I also lost one once, and between my fliers and craigslist, we got him back (he's chipped now too).
