We had a similar situation a couple of years ago with barn sparrows and successfully raised them. We found advice on the net and it worked. Soak dry dog food in warm water until soft. Use a tweezer to break it up into small bits and feed into the birds mouth as if by beak. It will await its feedings eagerly. Feed several times per day at first with small amounts and then larger amounts (appetite will dictate) few times a day. Hope this helps.
I have rehabbed starlings-- and have seen the little monsters drive a pair of woodpeckers from a newly made nest.I would make my homemade babybird food formula-1 pound lean ground beef -browned and d rained 1/4 c. grated carrots, 2 boiled eggs shell and all 1 c. game bird (or chick) starter. 1 dropper of bird vitamins- process in food processor. Storein freezer- taking out a days worth each day- warm and roll into balls- I usulla dipped my fingers in water to moisten it if it wouldn't hold together.I tried using tweezers- but found fingers were easier.boist cat food would work- or dry and soaked- I would expect catfood to be more "meat" since they are carnivores more so than dogs-hope it does wel for you. My grandmother had one years ago that said Sh*t- she kept it int he kitchen and apparently she said that alot when she cooked! she has one now- but he has never stayed in the kitchen and never talked either.Neither was releasable. She also had a robin for 11 years fed the formula plus fruits and worms.Jaque (her current starling) is 7 or 8.He gets crickets and mealies too.
*Lol!! To answer Frosty's question; canned cat food may have been a somewhat more meaty choice for the critter, but at 3-4 a.m., I tend to fall back on brain power and offer what I've actually used successfully in the past. Also, I couldn't, for the life of me, think of what PK8 would do with the leftover can food after "little Drac" had his fill!!! My cat won't touch leftover canned food, regardless of how you dress it up!! Guess I was thinking the starling wouldn't either. DOH!
Priszilla's recipe looks much better. I'll have to hang on to it.
