Found body minus head and skin on neck - leave flock in?

but won't there just be another one moving into the same territory?

also, how long should I leave the flock in?

thanks so much for all your responses - I am a bit shaken just now
Leave them in until trap at least one raccoon.

the dogs chased a racoon into our oak tree, about 50 feet up, the other night

they are Maremmas and 135 lbs a piece - we have two

they just were not out with the birds today and also, we have a lot of terrain and woods and the Guineas do not stay together, so the dogs can only do so much, I guess

not really sure what all they can do - we just got them 2 years ago as puppies and they are fully grown just now

I hope they had their rabies shots.

so sad - lost Dori today - a 5 and 1/2 year old Coral Blue Guinea Fowl hen

she did not come home and I found her body with the head missing and the neck bones all bloody and without skin attached to the dead body in a bush, under some dense weeds

do you think it was a racoon? owl is unlikely, do to the hidden, on-the-ground location

we had a racoon here lately that the dogs chased up into a tree at night but I did not have a problem during the day before - Dori was attacked in daylight at 5 pm - gets dark at 6 pm now

I could put a trap where the body was left but them I would have to kill the trapped racoon - hm - not really up for that

what should I do? would you leave the flock in? for how long?
Don't know if you have minks around, but a mink will drink the blood and leave the carcass. We've had problems with minks taking off the head and leaving the carcass behind.

we have two dogs - do you think they may do the trick or do you think I really need to kill the racoon?

I just hate to kill the wildlife

would cat food work in the trap if I go that route?

Maybe a neighbor with a gun would be able to shoot it in the trap - but that does not seem right to me

yet - I do not want to lose more birds - they are like family to us - and the predator just ripped her head off - what a waste of life

this was Dori - she started in my bathtub in 2013 as a keet and would have been 6 years old in June - I have spent pretty much a few hours every day with her since then - I'll miss herView attachment 1676873 View attachment 1676874 View attachment 1676875
:hit:hugs she was beautiful!

Sorry to say but those dogs look so sweet. I can't see them attacking even a raccoon. They look like pushovers.

Yeah, they do look sweet - but they are bred to protect livestock and fight wolves and even bear and mountain lions - they are actually pretty easy to tick off - almost had to return one to the breeder since they did not get along for a while - but they are sweet to people and overall great dogs

not sure how well our would do in a flight - I know the female moves in on intruders - the male seems to bark more - when we had a stunk come in, she got sprayed

it was hilarious - two 135 lbs dogs and a 150 lbs person running around the skunk and the little 3 lbs critter just went about its business as if we were not there - I had to laugh

our female Maremma, however, circled the skunk with intent to bite, I think - she circled in closer and closer until the skunk decided she was a threat and sprayed her

when a squirrel lost its babies out of the nest, he let me take it to a wildlife rehabber but she ate the one she found - our female Maremma seems to be more serious, even though she looks darl'in, too
