What type of chicken is this? Hen or rooster ? Also any chicken keeping tips are appreciated, we will be building a coop this weekend

Poor boy.

I'll agree with everyone above that it looks like you have a Leghorn rooster. Leghorns are a popular breed, especially around here with 4-H/Ag programs. The hens lay a ton of large eggs, and they tolerate being confined to smaller spaces better than other breeds.

It's wonderful that you are adopting him. You should be aware that roosters do crow quite a bit (did a leaf fall? did someone cough? did a dragonfly go by?). If you live with close neighbors it could be an issue (and in some places there are regulations about whether or not you can have a rooster at all).

Hi ! Thank you for the response, we were thinking rooster since he was dumped. Poor guy was out there for 2 weeks. We live on a state park and my manger approved me keeping him before catching it!

Agree with everyone else that he's a white leghorn cockerel

Before you build a coop, what are your plans long term? It's not good to keep a chicken alone so you will need to get him some friends. If you don't care about eggs, you can sometimes get away with just having a bachelor flock. Do know that bachelor flocks don't always work or only work for a while so if you go that route have a plan b and c ready to go. If you go with getting some females, I would get him no fewer than 6 girls to prevent them from being overbred

And as was also said, make sure you are allowed to have a rooster, if you can't keep him you can post some ads locally, online, in the buy sell trade section or reach out to your local 4h

Whatever you do, good luck and welcome to byc!

Hi ! We live on a state park and I got my mangers permission to keep him before we caught him ! We do have quail already and we were eventually planning on chickens so now is the time lol. We plan on building a hoop coop this weekend and then getting him some hens
