Found dead hen in coop

Thats the problem with hens. They don't act different until it is serious, otherwise they could be picked on. Physical symptons, weight loss, wounds etc. Easy to see. But when there's nothing to see, it's VERY hard.
I was always taught "See a single dropped haed, sneezse, etc... act"

I'm so sorry about your bird though

Can i just suggest you give the other hens a check though. It would be awful if they were sick and not showing it... and if she stopped laying and theres suddenly less, well. It might be grief, or coincedence, but doesn't hurt to be sure.

Great advice. This is my first experience with chickens and I am learning so much. Unfortunately some of the lessons are learned the hard way and at the expense of my chickens. The guilt sits heavy on my soul.
So far I'm down to 15 hens from the original 17 that I got as day old chicks last spring.
One to a coyote, one to a hawk, and now this last death. I knew that I would loose some and it's the reason that I got more than I had first planned to get. I'm a farmer and I know that if you have livestock...you will eventually have some deadstock. But it still breaks my heart.

As always, thank you all for you advise and kind words.

if you are just down 3 from last spring and this is your first experience with chickens then I think you are doing very well so far. Don't feel guilty at all! Your heart is in the right place and you will lose chickens every now and then no matter what.
