I found a peafowl egg (at least it really looks like one) recently and I am attempting to care for it. I candled it and I saw something inside, a medium-sized dark mass that I can't identify. It could just be the yolk. I have cared for many different types of baby animals, but I've never cared for an egg. I'd like some advice. Is the egg even alive?

A good indication of if it is alive or not is if you see red veins around the inside of the egg and you can see the chick moving usually also. Just candle it after a week or so and see if you see any growth. When it is ready to hatch the whole egg except the air bubble at one end will be dark. You can usually see some veins right by the air bubble at this point also. I've had eggs that get bacteria growth inside that looks just like a dark blob. I know when thats what's going on if I see a blob but no veins.

I candled the egg earlier today and it's alive! It looks like its 10-13 days in. Peafowl shells are so thick it's hard to tell exactly. Thank you for your advice. If it hatches I'll post pictures.

Yay, glad it's alive. Looking forward to pictures after it hatches

Unfortunately, the egg died. I don't know what went wrong. the temperature in the incubator was constant and I turned it at the proper times. Oh well. Maybe I'll try again someday.
