Tonight, I found about a dozen eggs some rogue pullets have been laying under the chicken coop. Is it a reliable method to put them in a bowl of water to check for freshness? The bad ones will float, correct? What temperature should the water be? If they are fertilized and have been incubating in the 90-100 degree weather we have had, will they float or am I gonna have to break them open to see if they contain a developing embryo.

PS I think I'll give them to my ex...

I've used the water method and it's worked. Justed used water out of the tap, no specific temperature, probably tepid... Anyhow, If it sinks and stays horizontal at the bottom of the bowl, it's fresh, if it rises on its end a little, not as fresh, starts floating off the bottom, less and less fresh... So on and so forth.

Then again, you could just feed them to the ex. I'm sure she'll let you know if they're fresh or not.
