Found German Shorthaired Pointer-need some advice....

My boss has had 3 GHS's. They are great dogs.

They were all very lean and could run all day. The current one is now almost elderly, but still spends his day hunting or thinking about hunting. Even if it is just a fly on the wall. But they did have to make fence him out of the birds, even then they lost a lot of them to him. He also tore up a few things looking for squirrels...like car/truck/tractor motors....

My step dad had a GSH as his hunting dog. They are incredibly smart and can be trained to leave your birds alone. (assuming you choose to keep her) My step dad used her for duck hunting. He had ducks on his pond at home that she never even so much as chased. But he got his gun and his wading boots on and she was ready to go.

I hope you find her owner, or a good home for her. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your loss on your dog.

I don't have anything additional to add other than this post is eerily timely.

Just this morning we had what looked to be a beagle/pointer mix hanging out on our back deck. She had tags on, so we called the number. The response, "ugh, again?", so clearly she's done this many times. The horrible thing is that we are in the city, and here is a dog that desparately needs a job to do and she is cooped up in a backyard somewhere. She likely caught a scent yesterday and had been wandering all night - her owner didn't know she was missing. I wish her the best, but I know she will get Goodyear disease soon. She is lucky she made it to our house unharmed as there is a very busy street right outside our subdivision with cars regularly going 50 mph. Breaks my heart knowing her days are numbered and there is nothing that I can do about it.

German Shorthairs are fantastic dogs! We have had them for about ten years...they are smart, funny, sweet-sweet dogs and can run all day!!! We have had 2 that were rescued and they were just as good of dogs for us as the ones we raised from pups. Maybe she is used to eating table scraps....rather than a raw meat diet. They all look like skin and bones mainly because that is the trait of that breed....and they certainly don't get fat doing all of that running.

GSP Rescue of Indiana has a page that allows you to join and post pics and info on dogs needing homes. Please go to this page and check it out. If you are sure you don't want to try and keep her, this is a great first step to cultivating interest in her and getting her in front of people who are all set up to contain/work/love a GSP.

I do TONS of rescue work and have worked with the GSP rescue here in Austin. They are a well-run organization that places a lot of dogs.

Keep in mind though, that she seems to have chosen you guys. If you go buy a roll of 5 ' or 6' welded wire fencing, some T-posts and one of those 2 acre hobby farm electric fence chargers and some wire and insulators, you could keep her in just fine.

Wishing you luck!

Update-

Her owner has been found! He just recently bought a house out here and didn't know who to call. He has described her to a T down to some very specific details. I'm so happy that I held onto her and didn't take her to a shelter.

Woohoo!!
