Found my hen dead this morning, help me figure out why, please

If you are, in fact, interested in treating them to keep rather than culling them, do some searches on here. Peter Brown HAS to say that, legally, but there are several folks on BYC who have gotten info. in this regard directly from PhD-level folks doing research at universities which is in direct conflict with what P. Brown says.

Whatever you decide to do, I'm so very sorry you're going through this. We're all here to support you, whatever you do!

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to let them all go.

I would take the time to use the Oxine to disinfect everything. I also took my birds back to the seller so I could get my $125 back. You might want to tell them what is happening and I wouldn't set foot back on that property again so you don't drag back the virus to your new flock.

This is such an awful thing to go through from the very beginning but don't give up!

I have contacted the person I got them from, no reply yet. So I haven't killed any yet. But today 2 more are looking bad. They are very lethargic, not eating, and basically sleeping all day. One looks like she's gasping for air once in a while. I think I might find them dead tomorrow.

You know what's funny? The one that died and these 2 are not even the ones that appeared to be sick! They seemed fine. Go figure.

Out of the five I had gotten, two were totally fine, perky and seemingly healthy. By day four one of those two suddenly began the horrible cough/shaking head. The virus can take 10 - 12 days to show symptoms. It really sucks that the seller isn't contacting you back. You may want to consider reporting them before they sell any more birds to unsuspecting people.

One more dead today, and the other one will probably die tonight.
The seller insisted they were fine when she had them, and refused to take them back. Not cool. I told her they were dying too fast and I couldn't in good conscience bring them back anyway. She didn't care.
So much for that.

I'm new to this gig, but was wondering. Is there someone in authority a person can contact about someone selling sick birds? I only have my first batch from Ideal but should I be concerned if I buy hatching eggs? What about other hatcheries? I'd like to get some good Delawares and Dominiques, should I be concerned about large birds or should I just buy hatching eggs from club members? I sure won't be buying any from the local auction that's for sure.

I have dealt with many a respiratory outbreak among my guys and gals. I dose em with Tylen, don't eat the eggs for 10 days and they always recover. Maybe I am just lucky, but they can get "colds" like us, as long as they don't start dying on you, just do what you can, make sure they have lots of fresh water, isolate (if possible) the sick ones and hope for the best.

Good luck with them!

Sorry, I just read the rest of the posts....they probably got something where they were bred, I hope you don't lose anymore, but try the Tylen, it has always worked for those who are not carrying a major disease or genetic problem. With chickens it is so hard to tell, it could be a million things.

Keep your chin up

Marshmallowpeeps,

Just now saw your latest post. I'm so sorry about your girls. I would definitely get a necropsy done to see what these birds are dying from. I think the information would be helpful in so many ways. Just a suggestion.

Sorry to hear about your girls, I use pine shavings for my birds as well. I have read somewhere along the road that straw is bad for chickens becuase of the dust and spores in it. Pine shavings are fairly cheap and easy to clean up as well. As for the lady you bought them from..she obvisouly doesn't understand the happiness that birds bring you.
