Found our first eggs! Are they still good?

This is probably a dumb question. My 7 year old found 4 eggs this morning (he feels like a superhero now

) We have 2 chickens and they are free range in our backyard except at night when they are locked up tight. In theory these may not be the first eggs, and even if they are they could be a few days old. How do we tell if they are good to eat? Everyone is excited to try our firsts but I don't want anyone to get sick. Thanks!

I believe the trick is to put them in water and if they sink they are okay. Anyone want to confirm that?

Yep... eggs floating in water are no good...sinking...good to go.

If they sink in water they are fresh, an older egg will stand on end and older than that will float

But stick some golf balls in the place you found those or you will spend MORE time looking for the next nest!
