We always argue as to what they are to be called. Of course he grew up in Texas, and I grew up in California... In California, we called them Japanese Beetles.
We also have a HUGE black beetle here called a Palo Verde Beetle.. so it could be one of those... but, they are usually deep under the ground, when they emerge in the summer it makes a big hole in the ground. They can be 5 to 8 inches long and have big pinchers on their noses. When they fly they look like small bird.
Whatever they are the big chickens gulp them down in a blink!
