Nice maggots....they look remarkably clean.

I've noticed my chooks in a feeding frenzy in cow pats in the summer with similar huge wriggling 'treats'.

Like Wildflower I'd like to know what they grow into. Is it dung beetles?

Been working on fixing up the yard and expanding the fencing for the puppies. Mockingbirds and Bluebirds are having a great time as long as Katie isn't chasing them.

I believe they are the larvae of June Bugs. We have some in our compost pile that are as large as my thumb/larvae of the large green June Bugs...my husband refuses to pick them up. I have always fed them to the wildbirds...next Spring when I screen my compost piles I will save them ALL for my girls!

Wow thanks for posting this!! I saw at least 50 of these in my compost the other day and was so grossed out I did not even think about feeding them to my chickens, Looks like my flock is getting a treat tomorrow morning!

I find these type of grubs in my compost as well. I have straw covering most of my garden area and compost and the grubs are definitely at home in there. The Hens love them.

We always argue as to what they are to be called. Of course he grew up in Texas, and I grew up in California... In California, we called them Japanese Beetles.

We also have a HUGE black beetle here called a Palo Verde Beetle.. so it could be one of those... but, they are usually deep under the ground, when they emerge in the summer it makes a big hole in the ground. They can be 5 to 8 inches long and have big pinchers on their noses. When they fly they look like small bird.

Whatever they are the big chickens gulp them down in a blink!
