Found some kind of necrosis after harvesting

I recently joined BYC, but have enjoyed reading the info for several years now. I have had chickens off and on all my life. About a year ago, I received a start up flock from my daughter, of 7 birds, including 2 roosters. I didn’t know which one I would cull out (harvest) until recently, the flock kicked out one of them. He seemed healthy but when I plucked and processed him I found a swollen area on his right hip. When I cut into the area, it was black and gelatinous, not like any infection I’ve ever seen. Any ideas what it could have been? I disposed of him in my outside wood furnace, to be on the safe side.

Was this black substance subcutaneous or was it deep in the abdominal cavity? If it was associated with subcutaneous tissue swelling, it's likely from a long festering wound. If it's source is from deep in the organ cavity of the abdomen, then I would worry about what hideous disease I've just introduced into my flock.

It was subcutaneous. If you look at both pictures it shows on the hip where I cut into it. The flock kicked him out. So I have been watching close this morning for more rejects

I’m hoping it was old blood from an injury. The first thing I thought about was a BB gun or some injury from fighting with another rooster. Him and the other one were getting along fine when he was the alpha.

I’m still a little worried. I’ve hunted all my life and never seen an infection that color from an old wound.

Perhaps it was a really bad contusion, like when a person gets kicked by a horse, the person would need surgery to remove the damaged tissue before it could heal. It's it possible he got an injury like that?

It looks like a blunt trauma injury based on the dermal staining of the cut away, and swelling with shadowing on the left upper edge..prob would be easier to see if it was rotated a bit clockwise. Large hematomas in subcutaneous tissue is slow to breakdown and reabsorb or expands with continued bleeding.
I can imagine with such an injury he would be a bit lame at the least. poor guy had a rough time. so sorry!
