So yesterday my ameraucana hen laid a huge egg. I was so excited, i thought for sure it was a double yoker. I cracked it open and I found what appears to be a small soft egg rite beside the yoke. I have heard of this but never seen it. Why does this happen? Is that really what this is??

Sorry for the poor pic quality. I had to use my phone to take the pic.

First time layer don't quite have the system up and going smoothly, and all sorts of things can stall that "conveyor belt." If the hen is stressed, or simply if things aren't moving along, you get double yolks, or sometimes things like what you have. It looks to me (but I can't be sure) that she was going to lay a "wind egg" or a tiny, yolk less egg, often it's the first egg laid, and then it backed up and got surrounded by the second egg on it's way down the path. I've written a blog about weird eggshells, etc. here: http://hencam.com/henblog/2012/02/brown-green-blue-white-chicken-egg-color-the-real-story/

The inside little egg, had a yoke. It was somewhat clear tho. The hen is a little over a year and a half old and has been faithfully laying for almost a year now. Nothing has changed so I don't think she would be stressed. My kiddo thought it was awesome tho, he sez and egg inside an egg, cool! :o)
