found this link on newsweek about killing all the mustangs!!!!!

Well first and foremost...I do not give two flips about Nutria's opinions on their species. Enough horses are slaughtered in this country each year. More and more of our animals are becoming extinct because of stupid moves like this. Our ideas of culling and the BLM's are very different.

The BLM's idea of culling means slaughtering indiscriminately and to such a low number that the herds will take forever and a day to flouish again. They did it with the Buffalo in Yellowstone and Glacier and they used the complete lame excuse of them carrying disease...a disease which we have vaccines for (if they could find one they tested that had it, which they never did). They were just too lazy to get off their butts and vaccinate. The issue was with cattle not buffalo. They went in and slaughter mothers and calves, bulls, yearlings and all healthy animals. The BLM is short for Blows Lots of Manure and Bad Land Management.

I have no issue with a cull that will keep herds strong and healthy but I have major issues with the BLM's slaughter version of cull.

What is the Nutria Liberation Front????

...and it all goes back to overgrazing of cattle, removal of wolves and coyotes and human interference.

Look up the statistics of how much impact cattle grazing has on the environment.

I got nervous and rethought my position. I want the moderators to know that I am not disagreeing with anyone in this thread. I have a dream - that all invasive introduced species will one day no longer be judged by their habitat destruction and threat to biodiversity. I look forward to the day when mustangs, zebra mussels, starlings and japanese beetles are free to gambol through the kudzu and milfoil together in unlimited numbers, happily ever after.

And then they wonder why the soil in the great plains of this country is DEAD...they have been trying for years to reverse the affects of removing the buffalo who fertilized and aeriated the soil in the plains. They will never learn that when you start messing with a species you mess with the entire ecosystem. From the lowly gnat to the blue whale...they all matter and play a part in keeping everything in balance.

Balance through killing what is needed to control population and maintain healthy animals and leave the rest alone.

Cetawin is absolutely correct. Think about the nasty mosquito - who likes those things? Yet, there is a bird in Alaska (I forget which one) whose sole diet consists of mosquitos. If the mosquitos were exterminated (and I for one wouldn't miss them), that particular species of bird would die. and then whatever animal needs that particular bird for its diet would starve...and there you go with the chain reaction.

Every action has a consequence. I wish more people would take their blinders off and see the bigger picture. We aren't the sole inahabitants of this earth, and by using up or mismanaging any resource will only hurt the ourselves in the end - maybe not in our lifetime, but our children's or grandchildren's.

The American Indians were wise - take only what you need.

dogzrule5 a bird called the martin will eat over 500 mosquitos per day that is why so many people put up martin houses. I have bat houses up for the same reason around the BBQ area.

What would you propose when all the hypothetical extra land also had too many Mustangs to support? A range war could ignite if the Nutria Liberation Front thought your introduced species was competing with theirs.

Get the cattle off that land and there would be enough food for the horses. The farmers are using that land for free and then complain if BLM makes changes.

Tell them to go use your own land like everyone else has to......

ETA: It has been scientifically proven that the equine species originated in North America.
