As I write this I am in Mexico. I left my birds in the care of a pet sitter. I had six silkies and five large egg layers. Two days after I arrived on vacation the pet sitter emailed me to say that she could not find four of my birds. All silkies. We live in Minnesota. They day we left there was a snow storm. I have two areas for the birds. The first is a sleeping coup and the second is the third stall of the garage. They are about 30 feet apart. All the water and food and nesting boxes is in the garage as that is where we have electricity. I told her that she would have to snovel a path from the sleeping coup to the garage as the bird hate to walk in the snow. In bad weather they just sit in the garage until it is time to go to bed then they walk to the outside coup. She said that at 7:30 they let all the birds out, fed them . Then left and came back at 4:30. They noticed that 4 silkies were gone. When I found this out at 6:00 I sent my neighbor over to see what was going on. All the remaining birds were in the garage. The was no path shoveled and the outside coup was locked. It was dark. The birds should have been. Locked in the outside coup but, I understand if the wanted to leave it open to see if the other " lost" birds would come in for the night but, the outside coup was locked up as well :(.. I thought that perhaps the silkies were hiding somewhere in the garage as they hate snow and if they did go outside thy would huddle around a bush but, there we 4-6 inches of hard snow on the ground and I don't see them wandering around searching for food. I called over some friends and the pet sitter to search for the birds the next day. They tore apart the garage and looked everywhere. Since there wasa snow on the ground they could even see if there was animal tracks..and there was none. They vanished into thin air. I cannot understand it. A fox could have taken one or two but, four? No feathers, no blood, no tracks and I honestly don't think the birds were wandering around outside. They do free range and we have never lost one to a predictor.. Then there are bald eagles in our area... But, the silkies stay under bushes.. And four? So perhaps a human came and took them? Or if the silkies were outside and somehow got locked out of there normal sleeping area.. Would they wander over a half mile to find shelter? Because my friends checked everywhere... I am going home tomorrow and my heart is just sick. I don't think I will be able to look at my flock with all those fluffy butts missing. I don't understand why or how they were taken and by what.. I am holding out that they are still coming home but, with each passing day it seems less likely. Thanks for your imput my dear chicken family. Oh and two silkie chickens were broody and in the outside sleeping coup when I left...

Really sorry to read this. It is not a good way to spend your time in Mexico, worrying about your birds back home.

I don't have any ideas about where your silkies might be...just wanted to say that I feel for you.

Hi,
I am home and there is no sign of the birds. I am starting to wonder if my pet sitter was being straight with me. I found out that her son had been doing all the care for the animals with the exception of two days. I am wondering if he found them dead because of lack of care. Did not ell his mom and just talk the bodies. Ther is no predictor that I know of that could take four chickens without a trace... Only neglect / a human would do that. Ultimately it was my fault for selecting this pet sitter. She came with glowing recommendations.mi met with her and her son for over an hour and a half. I emailed every day..I am just sick.. Thanks guys for listening.. Be careful of who you have take care of your birds..or just never leave home!!!

I wondered that.. What a stinkin' bummer. How long were you gone?

Do you think someone would take them? Like, someone that new you were gone?

Hi,
Some of my friends knew I was going to be gone. However, not many. My hubby is pretty private when we leave town. I cannot imagine that a friend would come and take them. I talked to the son of the pet sitter. He said that he was in charge of the chickens WED - Friday ( friday is when they went missing)... and Monday through Wed.. His mom did the weekend. First, she never told me that her son would be doing all the work. I asked her and she said she did Friday through Monday ?? that story does not match.. also, I thought that she was going to be with him. He is a very sweet kid but, he is still 16.. Some of the times and things they are saying don't add up. I am not sure if he came over when he said he did - he said he switched him from coop to coop because he thought they might be cold?? He said he shoveled.. I know he did not. He said the chickens were missing on Friday but, who knows if he came over Thursday to even put them in .. on Friday I think that he came over after school at about 4:30 - could not find the chickens and had to leave by 5:30. The sun sets at 6:00. He locked up the remaining chickens in the garage and also locked up the coop. If the silkies were outside. They would have wandered off or got eaten by something while they were out for the night. Or .. he did not take care of them on Thursday- left them out or locked and they died. He disposed of the bodies and did not tell his mom. The stories are not matching up. Also, I asked them to put the eggs in the refrigerator for me and there were no eggs there. The nesting box had 3 .. The big chickens lay 3 eggs a day. He said he took some? but, not since Wednesday. Huh? where are the eggs then? I really don't care if they took the eggs.. I just don't like to be lied to and it all seems like someone is lying and why lie if you don't have something to cover up...I am just ranting. There is nothing to be done. They are gone and it was my mistake. We have never lost chickens to a predador ... NEVER! I cannot imagine we did when I was away for a day. BTW.. we where gone for a week - we left on Wednesday - and the chickens disappeared on Friday. Perhaps Thursday?? I don't think I will ever know.. bummer.. big bummer... Thanks for listening. I need somewhere to vent!!

You can vent all you like!

I smell somethin' funny with these people. And if something stinks... it usually has something stinky on it. (You can substitute different verbage in there if you like.) :)

It's not your fault though. It's theirs. I hope you get to the bottom of things. Sometimes when you think things through pieces of the puzzle start coming together.

Keep us posted on any developments!

Sorry for your loss. I have lost two recently. Not as special of a breed as yours. They were mixed breed bantams. All I want to say is I know how you feel.
