Still only 2 eggs today, but when I got home from work and walked into the pen I had two squat at my feet immediately then two more hop up to the top of the feeder shelter and squat up there when I touched them.

Vent check is about 2 1/2 fingers.

I'm anticipating a 4-egg day within the next week. :)

The Brahma, however, is having nothing to do with this weird behavior her sisters are engaging in -- even though she's 2 weeks older. Which is why, as much as I love Brahmas, I don't intend to make them a mainstay in my flock.

Really.....why?

Because I am hoping to sell eggs. Not in a truly commercial way that would require me to have a flock of all high-production breeds, but in a hobbyist, offset some of the cost of the feed, etc. way.

So a few Brahmas for their stately, yard-dinosaur beauty, but better layers for the majority.

I've been very much impressed by my Blue Australorps -- which I initially bought because that was what was available at the farm store the week that they were supposed to have Delawares (but didn't because the hatchery didn't ship any).

My brahmas have continued to lay even though they are four years old now, will be five this spring. They are the first to start molting and the last to start laying, but they eggs are bigger and I do tend to get 3-5 medium to large eggs week which I didn't think was bad. I love their personalities. My barred rock is the egg laying champ. She was the first of my first batch of chicks to start laying, the last to start molting (which was end of Sept) and she started laying some jumbo eggs almost daily starting in Dec. I'm considering getting more barred rocks!

This years fall chicks (one is a Dominque/mutt and brahma cross) just started squatting at 20 weeks. Hopefully my egg basket will be full! The egg-citement never gets old!
