Fowl Pox - Cull or Give Away?

I just discovered a bird with dry pox in my flock. What I've read said it's slow to transmit to other birds, so vaccinate the rest of the flock. 1,000 doses is $4.95, so I've ordered the vaccine for the rest of the birds. If you don't want to vaccinate, just take good care of the bird and she'll get over it. I would never have known my bird was sick until I saw the scabs.

Good luck!

Oh wow, I told my hubby it had to be a cheap vaccine or nobody would do it for chickens, I didn't know it was THAT cheap. Yeah I'm definitely going to get it and vaccinate all my future birdies.

Can I vaccinate my ducks with this as well?

Thank you!

for those of you in the know...would you be able to eat the eggs during the infection or would you want to toss them. Just garnering information for future reference and hoping it wont be an issue

I'm glad it's fowl pox and not chicken pox!! I haven't HAD chicken pox, that one might kill me!!

Although I've now taken a liking to screaming, "A POX ON THIS HOUSE!" in random intervals.

I heard you can still eat the eggs no problems.

Here in soggy south Florida the mosquitoes bring Fowl Pox every year -- but only to the new young stock. Everyone who was around the previous summer has already either had it or has developed an immunity to it. It's usually the dry form and I seldom if ever do anything for it, just let it run its course.

There's a dear old lady here who's been keeping chickens forever & knows a LOT about them. She always advises putting black liquid shoe polish on the lesions. I'm not exactly sure just how that helps, if it's a preventative against its spread or a curative for the ailing bird. But her advice is usually well worth heeding.

Since the vaccine is so inexpensive and easy to administer, it would be especially beneficial to innoculate your show birds. I have a neat little Dutch bantam roo who lost 2 points off his comb because of lesions that grew there and then fell off. I don't show him, but if I did it would decrease his score.

I'm so sorry for all the troubles you're having there, you must be growing quite a crop of mosquitoes now.

I pray that things will improve there SOON!

And the oncoming storm... woohoo.

Yeah I'll get the vaccine for my showbirds... should I call the guy and ask if they've already had it? If I vaccine again will it harm them? I definitely definitely want to keep my show birds at their top for that price, I'll vaccinate ALL the birds - including the ducks if I can (can I?). How old do babies need to be?

I think, if anything, black show polish will stop the other hens from pecking them.

Hey if I find this on one of my meaties, can I still eat it?

Thank you

I order my animal supplies from Jeffers -- here's what the label says for the vaccine.

http://www.jefferspet.com/images/label/16779.htm

Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.

Use entire contents when vial is first opened.

The label doesn't say anything about eggs.....

Sorry, it's $5.99 plus a cooler for $3 and shipping....it does 1,000 birds but you have to use it all at once.
