Fowl Pox Problems?

My chicken passed away today. I thought it was supposed to move through? Well, the others aren't showing signs of it.
Sorry to hear you lost your hen. I'm here looking for what to do for a chick with the same thing (posibly, just started today on her eyes) ... I had one several weeks ago with a warty-blister looking thing next to her beak, and that one died too.

The dry kind is supposed to be non-fatal, but they can get other infections as a result. :(

Again, sorry you lost her.

Thank you. I guess that's what happened to her. I'm also sorry you lost yours. I've heard that you can use a cotton bud with iodine on it on the sores to help dry them, but not around the eyes. You can also use triple antibiotic ointments without painkillers in them. A friend of ours has raised chickens for a very long time. This morning we were going to get a sulfur solution from him that he uses when his get fowl pox. I'm not sure what all he uses in it :(. I'm not much use I know, but I've never had it in the flock before. I had no way to do it, but I was told it's best to separate the chicken from the rest of them. I hope your other chicken pulls through.

Thank you. Yes I pulled her and another chick because they stress if alone. I'm giving vitamins. The stuff is by the eye so I'm afraid to put anything on it. She's very perky though. I'm trying to post pics in my thread, getting some help there too.

My hen was perky as well, like nothing was wrong with her. But, the last two days she was alive, she was laying down and wouldn't walk. The next day she was hardly breathing. The same friend of ours thinks the reason she was down is because she got worms. I guess if that happens to yours, giving the chickens apple cider vinegar worms them. Put half a cup per gallon of water.

Just want to clarify that ACV will not worm any chicken. Sorry for the loss of the hen with pox. Although it is a virus, chickens with pox sometimes develop those pesky secondary bacterial infections caused by mycoplasma or E.coli among others, and if any scabs are near eyes, I would use some Vetropolycin or Terramycin eye ointment in eyes. If they act very ill, wet pox inside the throat may cause them to stop eating and drinking, so getting them to take fluids or consider tube feeding temporarily may help. Some vets do recommend an oral antibiotic during a bad pox outbreak, just to help prevent secondary infections, but it will not clear up pox until it runs it's course over 2-3 weeks.

Thank you.

I'm still dealing with her. We had put her back in with the others after a couple of days, but they must have started really picking on her. Found her in the coop hiding, and the scabs were covering her eyes (they had continued to get worse). Put her in the garage in a large tub with food and water, but I think she's temporarily blind. I've been syringe-feeding her a combination of mashed egg yolk, with a little rooster booster vitamins added, sometimes some water added but now I'm using sweetened condensed milk to thin it. Her beak has to be dipped in the water (though she's learning that I put her there after feeding and if I just put my finger behind her head, she drinks on her own). She only eats or drinks when I do it. But she's doing well, has put on a little weight. She's taken to standing up and walking in little circles, and she makes happy chirpy sounds most of the time when she's not sleeping, which she sleeps a lot. Today the large scabs came off one eye but it's still closed. I HOPE she can see again soon. She hates being syringe-fed but sometimes she will open her beak for me. I had another get pox on one eye a few days ago, but she's doing well. Hasn't affected the other eye and she gets around well and no one is picking on her, so she's still in the coop. One hen was lethargic for a day or two, showing no symptoms of anything I could see, but she's perked up and is almost normal again.

I am really hoping they will all be healthy soon, but I've had so much trouble in such a short time with them, I'm being cautious about that. I need to get back to work though, and this little BR girl needs to be better so I can. It's too hot to just leave her in a closed garage and too many hours without water if I'm gone.
