Fowl Pox! (renamed)

Okay, thank you all for your advice. I am going to vaccinate my 8wk olds because eventually they are going to go out the big coop when they are closer to laying. I don't want them to get infected as soon as I put them out there. The web sites have said 6-10 weeks is a good time to vaccinate.

Do you suggest giving them any preventative medicine in case of secondary infections?
Not really, there is nothing to help it, except keep the birds in good conditions and give good food and water.

The Dry Pox will not progress into wet pox......this as a different virus strain.

I am in Thailand and there are swarms of mosquitoes from the rice fields around my house. Every chicken I add to my flock, and the chicks growing up, all get pox at some stage, but I have never lost a bird to this disease. They get over it quite fast, then they are resistant to it in the future.

I have never had a bird get it twice.

You could add vitamins to the water and give them their fav foods to encourage them to eat more and keep strong. Also do not pick off the scabs, they will dry up and fall off on their own. Picking them off or trying to clean them up can cause open sores and they can get infected.

No, in fact I think that I gave one a yeast infection doing that.

I'm not sure that's true as I have seen some of mine start with just wet pox, then develop warts/scabs.
