Just so you'll understand pox:
You can't really prevent it - other than vaccinating a flock against it. The pox virus that birds get (avian pox, not 'chicken pox' ...grin...) is spread by mosquitos and by contact. I wish there was a way to prevent mosquitoes completely, but there is not.
I personally have never vaccinated my flock against pox. Usually they just don't get it, or get it and develop immunity against it.
Here's a site from our very own BackyardChickens that is wonderful in explaining how to treat if it's pox. It talks about the difference between dry-pox and wet (which would be the version your birds have if they meet the other qualifications for pox). It's the best article on pox I've seen to date. Hopefully it'll help you and your dad.
Hugs to you both! What a wonderful thing for you both to share, caring for the birds!
