!!!~FOWL POX~!!! suggestions PLEASE!

Just so you'll understand pox:

You can't really prevent it - other than vaccinating a flock against it. The pox virus that birds get (avian pox, not 'chicken pox' ...grin...) is spread by mosquitos and by contact. I wish there was a way to prevent mosquitoes completely, but there is not.

I personally have never vaccinated my flock against pox. Usually they just don't get it, or get it and develop immunity against it.

Here's a site from our very own BackyardChickens that is wonderful in explaining how to treat if it's pox. It talks about the difference between dry-pox and wet (which would be the version your birds have if they meet the other qualifications for pox). It's the best article on pox I've seen to date. Hopefully it'll help you and your dad.

Hugs to you both! What a wonderful thing for you both to share, caring for the birds!

Now about the sneezing... the bubbly eyes, discharge, sneezing...sound alot like the dreaded CRD or mycoplasma infection. One of the only "preventatives" we give our birds, (we also raise thai, shamo,etc..), is to use LS-50 the first week of life after we hatch chicks. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. CRD is a disease characterized by respiratory distress, usually brought on by stress factors. The best way to beat it is to breed for resistence and/or vaccinate your birds for it. LS-50 is not the vaccination, but a preventative to help the birds create their own natural immunities to the mycoplasmas. Unless you raise them in a glass box, your birds will be exposed to CRD at some point in time. Now if your birds are suffering from pox, this stress could have brought out the CRD signs. Without lab analysis, all of our guesses are just that, guesses. It is up to you guys to do the research and make the call as to proper treatment. The Vetrx will aide them in their breathing difficulties. The pox is a virus as was stated above and must be allowed to run its course. Good luck with your fowl fellow Oriental game friends.....
