Fowl Pox?

I'd like to begin with saying thank you to everyone who contributes to this site. This spring (2012) my fiance and I were newbies to owning and caring for chickens and really appreciate how helpful you all are. This site is such a huge help.

Recently we noticed a spot on our rooster's comb. I've attached a picture. This picture is one side of it. The other side looks more like spotty, black scabs. He doesn't seem to be in any sort of pain or discomfort, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. We've done a bit of research and it is sort of looking like fowl pox. Can anyone confirm that? And any advice on what we should be doing? We got iodine this evening and plan to apply that. We also bought a powdered vitamin supplement at our local supply store to add to the water. ! Happy you joined us. Often times marks like that on a comb are indicative of getting pecked at by another chicken and is really nothing to worry about. Have you seen other things with your rooster that make you think pox? Best of luck to you!

If it is Fowl Pox it takes about 3 weeks to run its course. Just watch to make sure it doesn't spread to beak and inside mouth/throat. I am dealing with pox in my flock right now, about half way through it.

Thanks to all for the welcomes and comments! We will monitor and if it doesn't change or get any worse we will post in the Emergencies/Disease section posted above. It doesn't seem to be bothering him and there is no change in his behavior, eating, drinking, etc that we have noticed. Hopefully this will run its course if its pox or heal up if some other sort of irritation.
