We had a fox kill one of our free range layers this morning. Heard the squawking, ran out found the dead chicken, but the fox ran off. She was surprisingly intact. I think the fox must have broken her neck. There were puncture marks on her neck and a few small tears on her breast. Since it was a fresh kill, I skinned and cleaned the carcass, waste not, want not. Only my second time butchering a chicken. My first was a hen that hadn't laid eggs for quite a while. But this one was a good layer. I found a fully formed egg with shell inside her. Along with about a dozen full sized yolk sacks, and dozens more smaller ones. My questions are is the chicken edible after being killed by a fox? We already ate the egg, but what about the yolks?

*I* would not consume the bird - I would not hesitate to feed it to my other birds or animals (thus avoiding waste), but would not feed it to humans....same goes for the contents of the repro tract.

i would second that, you never know what the fox could be carrying and having it's saliva in contact with your punctured chicken. with wild animals always air on the side of cation.
