Hi Everyone!
Please help, yesterday morning when I was outside working around the house I heard one of my ducks make a strange noise and I could hear her flapping her wings. I ran to see what was wrong and a huge fox had ahold of her :(
I ran at it screaming and luckily it dropped her before taking off, but once it saw I had her it started to run towards the drake that was at my feet. I scared it off but my poor hen has 3 puncture wounds under her left wing, and it looks as though it may have pinned her foot to her belly when he grabbed her so she limping really bad. I immediately took her to and indoor pen. She is resting a lot and is eating and drinking and taking treats but one out of the three wounds is oozing quite a bit. I tried contacting my vet and haven't heard anything yet. Any recommendations of what I could put on it? Maybe she needs antibiotics? I have no idea??? HELP!

Do you have a feed store nearby? If so, I recommend buying two items: Vetricyn and Hen Healer. Both are for wounds, and clear up infection pretty fast. Vetricyn comes in a spray bottle and Hen Healer is in a little plastic container. Both are extremely great product and I highly recommend them. So sorry you have to go through this! Hopefully my advice helps. I will attach pictures of them later so you know what to look for.

Sorry to hear of the attack on your birds. Foxes can be quite brazen , so i would definitely recommend keeping your birds in their coops and runs.
You can use triple antibiotic ointment on the wounds, just avoid any products with novacaine in them. Adding extra protein, vitamins and electrolytes to her diet will help her get over the attack.
How is she doing now?

Thank you both for your quick response!!
The vet got ahold of me and has her on an antibiotic. I will check out my local feed store for the other recommendations!!!
I have kept everyone in, it’s so hard because they are so used to having a big pond and lots of open space but I’m not willing to risk losing one of my babies!
She is a tough cookie, she’s not limping as much and is wanting to get up and around. I have taken her out to her pool and let her graze a bit but I stand with her the whole time!
I would love to live trap the fox and relocate it though!
Thank you again guys for your input! I love all of the support:)

Welcome to BYC! This place is a really fun place to learn and hang out. Seems like the more time i am on here, the better i like it!

I would rather send it to fox heaven than relocate it. I have NO soft feelings towards anything that might eat my ducky darlings.

I hope you and your flock get back to normal after such a scary experience!

If you trap, you must kill.....relocation is illegal for many good reasons.
Pretty hard to trap a fox.
Best to keep your birds behind electric poultry net or in a secure run.
Hope your girl recovers fully.
