Fox attacked my duck! PLEASE HELP!!!

If dogs are your worry, one of the easiest things a person can do is hot wire. It can be mounted a few inches off the ground on the pen, if the dog is a digger. Or if the dog is a climber/jumper, near the top. If mounted near the ground, a person needs to keep grass from interfering with the wire, as it will short it out if enough gets on it. Insulators are cheap and can be extended out from the fence with cut wood strips, to get the desired distance. I have a friend that has even successfully used this method for mink.

Or most farm stores sell push in hot wire posts for $1.75 each. A perimeter fence could be made at an appropriate height for the size dog involved. The fencer can cost anywhere from $50 to $125 and a roll of wire is cheap. Nobody likes the sting of hot wire.

Bird Sitter, I feel like you're talking out two sides of your mouth. If you share everything, including letting your birds on the neighbors land, I really don't get how it's all on the neighbors dog. Two species are allowed to free range, and you get mad when the predator does what predators do. They evidently want to put up a fence and contain their dog about as much as you want to put up a fence and contain your birds. And then given the known dog issue--I love my birds and free range don't go together for me. Either you love your birds enough to attempt to protect them, or you don't, and it's easier and more cost effective to replace them.

The dog attacking the ducks is not the dogs fault, or the dog owners fault if the ducks are not kept contained and provided for properly. There can only be blaim placed if the duck owner actually takes the steps to do everything they can to provide a safe place for the ducks.(like what Marty had done on her property by fencing everything in) If you want to turn a blind eye and allow them to wonder freely on and off your land then all bets are off, and they will all be killed eventually since no one wants to protect them. Shooting the dog with a pellet gun is animal cruelty and a chargeable offense legally that the dogs owner could come back on you with.

And unless all of you would like to give me ten thousand dollars I cannot fence in that much property! Their dogs are caged in and the ducks have a place for shelter!
Maybe someone thought it was the neighbors dog I didn't, You just seem so oh well about it killing off your ducks when you should be out there finding who this killer belongs too and either talking to them about and see if they will do something or taking matters into your own hands and taking care of the dog for good.

I think many people have some great sensible solutions here, and I don't like arguing or taking sides. They way I DO see it is this: The dog is doing what dogs, especially hunting dogs, do naturally. Unfortunately it is his nature. I think you do need to go talk to the owner of the dog and come up with a comprimise. You seem to really care about your birds. I know how I feel about mine and I would be sick if any of them was killed. I have ckickens and ducks.

No one is saying you need to fence your whole property, but a few people have brought up hot wire perimeters which is a good idea. Or fencing a small area for them to be put away in when no one is home, for instance and you can't supervise them. This is what I do. The girls go out when I am home and then back in their 10X20 chainlink run when I am gone. If you need to talk to your neighbors whom you share with, then do so and tell them that your birds need protection. Talk to the person who owns the dog, if they are un-willing to contain it, you do need to call animal control....you do have rights if you are doing everything you can to protect your animals. Shooting the dog will get you nothing except a law suit. If the owners continue to be delinquent of their dog and cease to contain it, animal control WILL confiscate it for property damage, but not unless you are doing everything you can to keep it out first. Good luck.

I live in Texas and i could shoot the dog, but i know its someones pet so im not going to that neither fence all the property. Haven't seen the dog in a week or two so lets just see what goes on. Everything has seemed fine the past week or so and my broody muscovy just hatched a baby! So excited! I do care about my ducks a lot, but i cant just pull five thousnad dollars out of my pocket right now. I'm trying to do what i can until then let's just hope for the best!

NO ONE said fence the entire property.................we all suggested fencing a SAFE AREA for the ducks to protect them from the dog. I took wont argue, but I will point out when someone is being neglectful, which is the case by not protecting the ducks.
