Vasper was running fast though the woods trying to get a handle on his emotions. The sound of his paw beats the only sound. Thinking to himself, "Why didn't I stay there, why was it so urgent for him to get to the farm to meet Mary. She wasn't going anywhere. They were so young and helpless." He slowly came to a stop, he was panting so hard. But he told himself that it was the wind in his eyes that made them water, not tears. At that moment his shaking legs gave out and he sank into the leaf litter of the woods floor and cried hard and deep for all of those he had lost too soon and for Red's losses as well.
