He shot it coming out of enclosure and it 'came back to life' and went back into enclosure?? huh!

Good on you for finishing up the job and learning a new tool sometimes needed in chicken keeping.

Could be.
Rake that dirt pile smooth and you might get some prints to ID.
Put a couple of strings of yarn or something like that over the hole to see if the hole is still active.
Look around for another hole within a 10-20 foot radius, most dens have 2 or more holes.
