Does anyone have good suggestions for live fox trap? We prefer live because we have dogs and kids running around and don't want an accident if we don't set it off during the day. Any suggests? It has killed 6 almost full grown turkeys and many more chickens.

From what I have read it is very difficult to live trap a fox. Basically you would have to get all human scent off the trap and camouflage the trap to not look like a trap. Also, what do you plan on doing with the fox after you trap it? In many states it is illegal to release an animal you have trapped into another area.

I would suggest you get some electric poultry netting to protect your birds. Maybe they will not be able to free range as far as they have been doing, but it would keep them safe.

I can't help with a live fox trap either but we had a rabid fox chasing people's pet dogs and there were also rabid coyotes around. For that reason, I would want to put up protection for the chickens. I realize that may not be feasible for you if you wish to free range. Be safe and good luck to you!

I have been using live-traps extensively for catching Raccoons and Opposums with a few Striped Skunks and Great-horned Owl as a bonus, plus have videos of Red Foxes messing around with same traps. The traps are Have-A-Heart (Dimensions: 32 in x 10 in x 12 in). The Red Fox have been very reluctant to enter trap, possibly owing to the traps size. A larger trap I think is needed. Then you may have to condition the fox over several visits before it will go into trap.

My actual trapping has involved #2 coil spring traps, again where fox is conditioned to approach trap location. My setups look nothing like regular trapper of wild life would employ. Live chickens have been the bait. Setups operated only at night and so chicken not at risk of even loosing feathers. Since I have multiple dogs that usually run free all night and during much of the day, the dogs are confined when traps active during night and traps are covered with a plastic milk crate during the day. Most intensive fox action here based on game camera images has been at night, although fox can come in at any time. The foxes here keep a pretty tight schedule.

The foxes caught have been dispatched since I lack permit likely needed to transport the animal live.

Cover the trap with plants or hay, make sure the floor is well covered with something feels like the ground around it and buy a smaller live trap or fox proof cage and put a rabit or any live animal in it then secure it to the front of the fox trap.

Keep your birds in a safe coop and run, or you will loose them all! Electric fencing or electric poultry netting will keep them out, if set up properly. Live trap only if you will then shoot!
It is hard to actually catch a fox in a live trap; see @cmom and @centrarchid , who both have threads about it.
We couldn't catch our chicken killing fox in a live trap, but notified all the neighbors, and everyone with poultry within a mile, and one of those folks got a good shot at him a week later. Our culprit was nearly bald from mange, so easy to ID, and hunted during the day.

I am getting ready to start trapping for fox the first time this year.

I have electric wire up around my coops and pens. I have caught fox in leg traps and live traps. With the leg traps I put a bird the fox killed as bait and put the leg traps all around the body so It would be sure to get caught and another fox I baited the trap with some old chicken we had processed but found its way to the bottom of our freezer. I let the fox take the bait for a few days then set the trap. Both fox were mangy and stinky. I have a fox I have been seeing on my game cameras quite often lately. It is a skinny fox. It may be a young fox. I heard something test the electric wire the other night. I think it may have been the fox. Once they test it they don't test it again. I don't use the leg traps anymore because some of the neighbors have divided their properties and have been selling some and new people have been moving into the area and building new homes. I have caught a couple of cats in my live traps. I have a dog on camera around the live traps but it didn't go into them.
