Fox spotted

Thank you to everyone that replied. I did not realize that a fox would come up while we were out there with them! We will have to just use the portable pen for awhile and keep a close watch. It isn't dig proof, but I don't put them in it unless we are home. I will keep them close to the house as well.
We have considered electric fencing, but the coop/run they are in now is not going to be permanent. I was planning on building next year. Can the wiring easily be moved?
We were not planning on trying to trap them, as it would be more likely to catch the cats than the fox.
takes 5 minutes or less for a hungry fox or coyote to dig under a fence...just fyi

It is crazy how fast they can dig. I am thinking they will be confined quite a bit this week. What I meant about the portable run is that I will put them in that when I am outside working, when I usually let them free range. Usually I put them in it when working inside, but that won't be an option now. They won't get to free range until we can solve the fox problem. I am checking into state laws on fox "removal". I am going to talk to our neighbors as well. One has chickens also, and the other has two small dogs that would be easy for a fox to get.

The white wire is electric. I also have cement under the gates because I had a fox dig under a gate and kill several birds. all of my pens are also covered because I have a couple of open coops and an owl got in and killed several birds. I have game cameras up. This is a grow-out coop and pen. Primarily in the springtime I have heard critters connect with the wire. Once they know it's there they don't come back to test it out again. I have accidentally touched it and it has my heart skip a few beats.View attachment 1424826
The end coop is the one both the fox dug under the gate and the owl got in. I put the tarps up. View attachment 1424827
That is a very effective approach. Stress the positioning of hot-wire even with respect to something flimsy like chicken wire.

I believe that 'closed season' means when it's NOT legal to trap for fur. That's 'open season'. So a landowner can kill animals attacking his animals, on his land, anytime.
For total clarity, call your DNR.
Notice that ANY relocation is illegal in Va.

Just call them. In Nebraska, it means we don't have to wait for the intended open season to do away with pest/predator control.

If it makes you feel better, ask them to send it to you in writing and sock it away.

I have a letter for that and for stray/wandering dogs.

Virginia is VERY strict on loose dogs going after livestock.

Ah now this is where I'm at home years of experience with foxes
Here's some tips
  1. A fox has all night to start fiddling with the coop and a fox will.aways find a way to mess with u how to solve it put an extra layer of wire around the coop
  2. Get a fox trap if the fox trap works get a proffeprofes to take care of the fox usallus a vet
  3. This is only if u have large amounts of poultry get geese or swans they are VERY protect I've of the coop and will scare away a fox
  4. And this is one tip only to be used in the extrem case and u'll need to check with the local athoritys first and is a crule way to take care of fox and it's sitting up and shoot the fox
  5. These are a few simple tips and it's up to u which u do
