It is a red fox. Good to know about the cats. One of them is still a kitten at 6 months. I have heard them growling at something at night, and last night they were fighting something. This morning I spotted a possum on the chicken coop so I am guessing it was that, and not the fox.

Most cats, and other predators, are careful about who they will actually engage. Cats fight other cats, not other predators their size. Except probably mothers with kittens.
I do hope that your cats are all vaccinated against rabies, at least!

Oh yes, both cats are fully vaccinated, with all required and recommended vaccines.

The fox is gone. The neighbors dog got it. It apparently was stalking their rabbits. They called me this morning to let me know. We hadn't seen it since that first sighting. I am sure there are others, but at least for now I feel like I can let my chickens out to free range while I am out with them again.

We did put out one of my husband's old game cams in the woods behind the house, so we can monitor for more of them.

ETA that rhe neighbor said it was not a nursing mama, so at least there are not kits out there. It was a male, and very skinny.
