My wife is terrified I'm going to kill or seriously injur our daughters favorite barn cat with my traps. I've got both live cages and coils for setting and can put them relatively far away from the barn but does anyone have experience with trapping foxes? They just don't seem dumb enough to walk in the cage style (unlike the cat which I already trapped once) and the coons have an uncanny ability to eat the bait and get out without being caught.
Advice?

Catching a fox in a cage is a low odds pursuit ... but it can be done...

What size is your coil spring trap?

It might be best to set the coil springs and then crate the cat at night, and cover the trap set during the day.

The foxes (I've seen five together recently) could care less about the sun. They took half my flock in a single day in broad daylight because the dog was inside and the horses were moved to the other side of the property so there was nothing but vulnerable chickens around that day.

#1.5 (4.75" jaw spread)

I’m not recommending you let your cat get into it, but if it did, it’d get its feeling hurt but probably not much else.

Even if they’re cruising during the day, you can still set and catch them at night... again just put the cat up at night, and cover the sets with a bucket or something during the day.

Edit to add:
Since you have a cage trap, you might load it up with bait and bed your coil springs next to... you can likely catch the foxes as they “dance” around the entrance of the cage.
