fox

And if they are really hungry or feeding young they don't usually give a hoot about having humans around and will take their prey in front of you advancing on them.

they are constantly trapped threatened and harassed here that may be the difference LOL

2 days after the fox took my Buffy, I saw him in my yard again. 50 feet from where I was standing guarding my girls. This was at 3pm. The unusual thing that I remembered both times was that there were crows cawing and cawing when the fox was in my yard. It just dawned on me today. I can't let my girls out to free range anymore. So sad for my chickens.

Crows will frequently warn as to the presence of predators. When the crows here alarm, my pigeons leave their aviaries and enter their lofts as they know that a hawk or other predator is arriving.

Lost a large BR Hen yesterday. She was grabbed less than a foot from our attached garage door. A clear path of feather to follow through our backyard, into a wooded swamp.

We also lost a hen on Easter Sunday afternoon, but my husband swore it was a dog based on the feathers, signs of struggle, and where the feather path led. I felt like it was a fox (or a fisher cat?). Only one hen left now!

We have borrowed a live fox trap from family. Any suggestions on placement or bait?

This time of year will make them come out at any time of the day. During the fall and winter where I live the become very predictable late in the evening. I wait up for them and stop them before they ever start. I always thought I could live along side with them but that's not possible because they are thieves. Now I have a freezer full of pelts.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have informed my better half to set up some fencing and traps with sardines!!
I will share if I have any luck!
