Free chickens, need help identifying them

The middle one in the first picture (of the newer pictures) looks like a little roo, doesn't it? And wouldn't that mean they can't be red sex links? If they were, the roo would be a different color than the little pullet, I thought.

But I'm confuddled...

Still a great deal on some nice looking chicks. take 'em!

I stand by my original guess. Golden comet (sex link) males are a completely different color than the females. Golden comet females have white spattering on their butts. Yours are not sex-links, they are productions reds. Productions reds have the same coloring for males as for females. You definitely have a little roo there.

I take it that little guy won't be a very good egg producer? ....LOL

We wanted to originally have four to six egg laying hens. But this is what we are giong to start with for now, seeing how they are being given to us.

Is there any advantages to having a Rooster around, if our main plan was to only have a few hens for fresh eggs?

Lol, this thread is about to get a WHOLE lot longer! You've asked THE question of the hour. There are arguments on each side about the pros and cons of owning a roo. Some people swear by them, some people swear their hens and family are happier without.

It all depends on your personal preferences, your location, your tolerance for early morning noise, and your future plans for expanding/breeding your flock.

Hope that helps!

I say keep the roo. there is nothing like watching the roo protect the flock, or watching the miracle of life under your hen.

So we'll have the four pullets for fresh eggs, and the little rooster, to do what ever he does.
