Ugh, These posts always make me sooooo itchy!!!

Ok so I have Sevin-5 while that work?
It says 5% dust?
What do I do now?

Put on a face mask or tie a bandanna around your nose and mouth.

Get someone to help you if you can it makes the job easier and faster.

I hold the bird upside down and sprinkle dust all over the vent area and under the wings. I tend to over-do it and sprinkle around the neck area too.

In two weeks you'll have to do this again to get any critters that hatch out.

I also sprinkled my nest boxes and the litter on the floor of the hen house.

I picked up a bag of diatomaceous earth (food grade) and sprinkled it all over the area where the girls dust bathe, and in the hen house (floor and nest boxes).

I put a little bit in their food too.

I have heard of people who have had a particularly bad case of mites who made a white wash of DE and painted the roosts too.

I haven't had any mites since.

I just wanted to say...GOOD LUCK treating your birds, and I hope you are able to keep them. I'd be crushed if I had to get rid of my flocks!

LOL me too! But I have learned everything I ever wanted to know about mites with this post and will be going home to dust my hens just to be sure. I've never suspected them of having mites, their vents areas are clean and fluffy, their combs are soft and red, but you never can tell! Also I've been wanting to get some DE just for them to dustbathe in and if it helps prevent the nasties, then I'm all for it.

I pour about a cup of the 5% Sevin dust in the toe of an old stocking to make an easy applicator. Just shake it or pat it where it's needed. It really helps to have someone do this with you, but I've dusted my birds all by myself. Hold them by their feet so you're getting the dust on their skin up under their feathers.

You can also put Sevin dust in a canister with holes drilled in the lid, or in something like a parmesean cheese container. Sprinkle dust where your chickens spend a lot of time, in & around their nest boxes & under their roosts. Sprinkle it in the areas where they dust bathe.

Also, call the Miami-Dade County Extension Office & to find someone local with chicken expertise. Where are you in Miami? I know there are other chicken keepers in your county, there's always a nice showing at the county fair. There must be someone they could refer you to, a local vet who could advise you, other experienced chicken keepers. I am in Palm Beach County & have resource people here, but there must also be some in your area who could help you.

Check on the other sections of the forum for more help with mites. They can be a problem, but are treatable and shouldn't mean you must give away your feathered friends. Anyway, if they're so infested with mites no one will want to bring them home to their own flocks.

Let us know how things turn out, I wish you well!

Treatment post I see that we both have the same ideas Sunny_side_up
This is time consuming but well worth the efforts given!

1) Remove all bedding from the coop and replace with clean bedding.
2) Take the sevin dust (I get the dusting tube with holes for easy shaking) and pick up (each) chicken. Turn it upside down hanging by its legs dust under their wings on their bumm and then turn them over and dust the backside. Do this in the coop where they run so the extra dust falls off on the bedding and flooring. They play there and therfore will kick up the extra dust on themselves and it will also kill any mites in the bedding. I also wiggle their feathers around to get the dust good and deep in their feathers. Use gloves if you are sensitive to sevin dust. I just use my hands (maybe I am getting a good dose of lice/mite protection

)
3) Do this with each chicken.
4) Then dust the floor of the coop and run and anywhere they roost to help with protection.

Repeat this 7-10 days later. That will kill off all the immediate pests and the 7-10 days later will kill off any newly hatched mites or lice.

Good luck with the treatment and yes the sevin-5 is fine. I like using the sevin dust for the main fact that it drops to the bedding and therefore helps 2 ways versus the ivermectin.

You can also do the ivermectin treatment which takes care of this. I am just not sure of the dosage and you can kill your chicken if you overdose them. Make sure you contact your vet on the dosage for ivermectin.

We have a burn pile and we mix in soot from our brush burning with the chickens sand in the run. We've never had a mite problem. You could try that?! Or DE does work WONDERFULLY from all the feedback I've heard about it.

Maybe try something you haven't tried before and save your hobby before you give up.
