Hello All!
I'm in the SW suburb of Chicago.
Early this morning, I found a family of ducks in my backyard - mother with probably 10 ducklings, look like day olds.
The mother didn't seem well: she barely walked and once she saw us, she managed to fly away. I gathered as many ducklings as possible (I caught 8 of them) and put them in the empty swimming pool hoping mom would come back. The ducklings made a lot of noise but 10 hours later their mom didn't show up. I don't want to leave them outside much longer because it's getting chilly I'm afraid my dog will "take care" of them, so I have them indoors in a cardboard box. They are pretty lively, they peep and jump but do not eat. I don't have a brooder and I'm not equipped to keep the babies as I don't really know how to care for them. Is anyone interested in caring for them? The mother didn't look like a mallard; she was slightly smaller and brighter in color.
I called the Humane Society in Chicago Ridge and they said it's actually illegal to capture wild animals and told me to leave them be. But I know they will likely die if I leave them overnight.
this would have to be a local pick up.
Please help!!!
