I would never feed my chickens maggots that have been feeding on dead/rotten things.... the chickens can get very sick from it.

There's a really fancy pot thing called a biopod which is designed for growing soldier fly larvae, without the roadkill part. It looks nifty, but its an awful lot of money for chicken treats.

Really? Is this just conjecture or do you have reference?

Its been metioned on here several times.. And its just common sense also...

I see nothing wrong feeding them maggots... just not ones that have been eating decaying/rotten meat. I think they can get botulism from them if they've been feeding on rotten meat... (there was a thread about it a while back from Glenda... and others too...)
Either way..its not a risk i would ever take... nope..

I think that glendas thread said meat... but i could be wrong...
I dont know if veggies give off the same kinds of bacteria when decaying....

We cut an 8" hole in the bottom of a plastic bucket, then cut a 12" circle out of 1/4" hardware cloth (wire screening) and place it on the bottom inside of the bucket. Then drill (8 to 10) 1/2" holes near the top of the bucket. Fill it 3/4th with rabbit, chicken or cow manure and dump a couple of cups of water over the top of the manure and cover with the lid and hang it about 3' off the ground (sun or shade) in the chicken park. It doesn't smell like rotting meat and produces tons of fly maggots. Using meat will draw the blow fly which is a biting fly.

Which ever method you use your birds will love you for it.

LOL! So I noticed this thread is fairly old and the OP is named Janetin Tenn. Well, I had to laugh when I realized I have seen Janet on you tube. She has the funniest video where she is showing her Freedom Rangers and other chickens and one of them lands on her head. Check it out!:

Another free food idea, Japanese Beetles. You can buy the baits separate from the bag (bag-a bug) at the hardware store. I staples on to the ceiling of my layer coop. The beetles would fly in, fall off, and get eaten. When the Japanese beetles are bad, I take a bucket and knock hundreds of beetles off of my beans and peas, and into the bucket, then dump it out for the chickens.
