Free Parakeet?

Check your local avian vet and post a wanted flyer there. I've seen people do that and it's a low safer. Sorry about the Craigslist thing, don't people have anything g better to do the. Advertise imaginary animals for ridiculous prices? So depressing.

Parakeets are actually really inexpensive at petstores(not the big chain ones like petco or petsmart). I have a family owned local petstore and their birds are kept in large glass enclosures kinda like the ones at petco but better and safer. They have baby (weaned) parakeets brought in from a breeder twice a month and the price is only $19.99. The babies are banded (so you can track the breeder) and already semi tame and they get sold fast. The ones at the big chain petstores are from factories I hear, and they arent young either and overpriced. I went to petco to pick up a happy hut for my conure and looked at their parakeets and one of them had scissor beak. I felt terrible leaving the poor thing there but I dont need anymore birds.

Please note that not all family owned petstores are good. I went to one where the parakeets were only $12 but they were in dirty cages, overcrowded, and fed millet with dirty water.

Yeah. My pet store charged $21 each budgie. Next thing I knew I burned through $100 in just a little bit. I did get most of the stuff I needed though. Sometimes those pet stores aren't much to be desired.. I went in to a petco the other day and saw some pretty sad animals. The one that made me feel really bad was a sick canary that was laying in it's food bowl, really weak, and breathing hard. :hit

I bought a lovebirds while ago from a pet store. It was a large pet store but I've never heard of it before so I don't know if it's family owned or not but the lovebird was sick. This is why I personally prefer reputable breeders. They are responsible and give their birds the best care and make sure they go to good homes.

Hey, I know this is an old thread but I wonder if someone can help me out. We got a white parakeet the other day from Petsmart. we were going to get it at Petco but just didn't feel right about theirs. So the little guy is very tame, already knows where its cage is. It makes little sneezing sounds occasionally, and fluffs its feathers up a lot. Is this normal? It is either very tame, or sick. It's pooping, drinking, and I think it's eating. Also, Petco was selling them for $19.99, and we got the little guy from Petsmart for $23.99. That's expensive, isn't it?
Thanks!

Honestly I prefer Petco over Petsmart because when I do end up going to either store I like the look (healthwise) in the birds in Petco rather than Petsmart. But neither store is perfect and I do see sick budgies at Petco. It might also be the Petco's where I live are better than Petco's in other states and the same with Petsmart. I did not buy my bird from either and actually went through the breeder route and got my English Budgie for free. The price for the budgie that you got at petsmart is a little more expensive (Oregon petsmarts sell them for about twenty-one dollars.) But that's good compared to other parrot prices such as a canaries.
If your bird is sick than watch it carefully. I would also put some electrolytes in water to help boosts energy in your bird. My bird went through something similar but he got through it and is fine now.

Ok thanks. The poor bird actually died about a week later. Thankfully Petsmart gives you 14 days to return the bird, dead or alive. We got another one who is extremely active. Thinking its a girl due to personality.
She needs a buddy so we will be getting one or two from a breeder soon.
