Our 4 hens that lay were kept up until late this last spring and had been laying for about 6 months before I let them free range. 2 hens laid in the next box when they were kept up all the time the other 2 wouldn't. I let them start free ranging and it's a hunt all the time. The last 2 weeks they have been laying in another coop! but at least they are easy to find. I tried keeping the in the coop but it doesn't work. So for us what has worked for other won't work for us.
