Free-range chickens?

I, too, have been calling my hens free-rangers. The come out of the hen house by 10 AM ( usually before that)and roam all over our acreage, returning to lay at will. They are very happy birdies and know that when the golf-cart moves they will get something extra...hilarious actually! Then around dusk they start working their way back toward the hen house from the nearby pastures, and if I don't get there on their schedule, they go to roost naturally. It is an easy method for me and they are content. I can't imagine owning a flock and keeping them in a little cage all day. I am not really an activist, but is just seems sad.

I don't think any creature can really be fulfilled by a life in small~ or even larger~ confined spaces with no natural habitat...fish in tanks, birds in cages, dogs in kennels/homes, horses in a stall, cats in a home, humans in a cell.
