Free-Range eggs vs. Store Bought eggs (Persuasive Argument Paper)

All my friends think chickens are beneficial or considered as pets. They think they are nasty, dirty, and livestock. How do I make that into a thesis statement?

How about something like "Should we allow chickens to be raised in urban areas or should they be confined to the farm?"

This is a very good topic for a persuasive argument that continues to make the news in many cities. Your teacher may still not agree that this is a good topic due to his own lack of knowledge on the topic, but you could show him a few newspaper articles from across the country where this is a current, highly debated topic.

It allows you to talk about the benefits of chickens as you mentioned and lets you branch into the growing popularity of "backyard chickens". There is the pet factor, the economics of raising your own for eggs or meat, the consolation of knowing that your food is raised humanely and without adulterants, self sufficiency, "green" living, etc. Then you can spend all kinds of time debunking the popular chicken myths that abound.

Well, I have changed my topic for my paper. The new topic is free-range eggs VS. store bought eggs. This way I can tell about battery cages and the benefits of having chickens/eggs all in one!

This is what I have so far:

Thesis Statement- Consumers should buy free-range eggs versus store bought eggs.

Reason 1- Free-range eggs are healthier than store bought eggs.
* Have less cholesterol and contain more omega-3 fatty acids.
* More flavor than store bought eggs. (deeper yolk color is more appetizing and favorable to consumers)
*preservative free/hormone free

Reason 2- Store bought eggs come from battery cage systems.
* inhumane treatment of hens
* store bought eggs more likely at risk of diseases (more than 23% of farms with caged hens tested positive for salmonella, compared to organic/freerange {4.4 & 6.5%} )

Reason 3?- Helps support small businesses vs. commercial enterprises.
*builds selfesteem of backyard farmer (knows that he is providing a healthy choice foods rather than overprocessed foods)
*we need to preserve the great heritage our forefathers built
