I've only had my adult Blue indian peafowl for a week now. It's been raining all day long and the peafowl won't come down from the tree to eat. Is this normal? How long can a free range peacock go without food? Most bird eat alot, these two, a male and feamale peafow,l sit all day at the corner of my fenced in 10 acre farm preening each other. I only see them eat at the end of the day and that's only when I bring them a bowl of grapes, peanuts, dogfood and corn. After this they meander back to their roosting tree for the night. Their behavior has me perplexed.....I'm a first time owner of peapowl. Can they go days without food???

You are offering them a wide variety of food which is good news.Peafowl can live with very little or no food for several days.Wait until the weather gets better. It is normal for them to just sit up on trees on a rainy day.

Welcome to BYC!

I'm still learning about peas, so I can't comment on what's normal for newly acquired free rangers, what I do know is that water is more important than food.

I noticed that peafowl have difficulty biting into fruits that are hardy including apples. I therefore cut into small pieces and offer them to make it easier for them to eat.

Congratulations

Thanks Pedda, I walked over to their perching tree the following day which made the birds nervous and as usual they jump down to the ground. I can't get too close to them, may be 10 to 15 feet so that's where I sprinkle their food and as soon as I walk away they're there eating it. I purchased two more full grown black shouldered peacock and normal colored peahen. These I can actually touch; they are much more use to being around people. Thanks again for the helpful information

Zazouse, they are suround by an 8 ft high tensile criter proof fence on 10 acres. This should give them time to acclimate I hope. They are getting use to me feeding them and are starting to roam around to investigate which I'm glad to see. I bought 2 others yesterday which are tame and don't seem to mind me petting them. All have one wing clipped so they can't fly away. Made them a ramp the other day from 2by4's so that they could get into a different roosting tree, one much larger than the one they have been going to. Think they are much happier now tree (much larger branches to perch on). There feathers should grow back in about 4 to 5 months from now....hope they decide this is home for them. Also I have some guinees and if the peafowl go too far, the guinee's loud screatch may be a way to find their way back, at least that's what I'm hoping. Loved your vegitable platters, looks very appetizing, makes what I'm feeding them look so bland.

That sounds great but they can still make it over that 8 foot fence, my peas can jump straight up 6 foot no problem, i even had a hen that got in the dog kennel witrh some pups that i had in training and they pulled almost all ther tail feathers and left her with mabe 3 wing feathers on each wing and i want you to know that girl was up in the tree with the rest of them that night i could not believe it, i was all set to catch her on the ground that night and pen her up till they grew back.

I hope they settle in and stay, i was worried about that so i started from scratch with wee peas.
