Thank you all for your input! I think Ill go with the just letting them out for an hour or so before dark. They will have to work fast to tear the place up in that much time! They do have everything they NEED to stay in their run and coop, but they are so cute to watch! Which do I love more? My chickens or my flowers? hmmmmm Ill have to come to a decision before spring!

We put bird netting over smaller plants they find tasty and make chicken wire rings to put around bushes when we let them out (for a couple hours after work and on the weekends) to keep their little beaks out of our business. They still make a mess of things but they also eat grasshoppers- take the good with the bad! bird netting is cheap- $6 or so for a huge chunk at WalMart.
