Free Ranging and laying....

'Fraid my free rangers lay anywhere.

I let them out 3-4 hours after it gets light and then watch them for a while. Usually I can find where they lay. Two of my hens 'sing' for a good 5 minutes after they lay, being so proud of their achievement, so their eggs are easy to find.

Placing dummy eggs where your hen has laid will encourage her to go back there to lay,

Hope you find a strategy that works for you

Good Luck,
Sandie

Seriously, I have four hens and one of mine laid her first egg yesterday and a second one today.

I too was worried as mine free range the back garden until they put themselves to bed at night and then I shut them in. But I have always made sure that the nest box is as free of poop as possible and inviting. It is where they feel safe and private that they will lay. So when you see them looking around for somewhere clean and private this is when she will do her thing. It will in all probability be the nest box.

Hope this helps.
