Free ranging logistics issue

When that chain link gate opens, how close to the coop does it come?
I'm assuming it opens towards coop and not into yard.
Attach some fencing to edge of gate to block birds from getting between gate and coop,
you'll have to be careful not to short out your hot wire,
then just open gate and run door to funnel them into the yard.
You could also build a block/fence out of wood attached to coop for gate to open against.
Course there's no guarantee they will stay in the fenced yard.

I was thinking about that this morning and I tested it, there's probably about 2 ft opening which I could cover with a tap. and then about 8" btwn run and fence that they could squeeze by that i should probably cover too. It's more so the catching them to come in to the run than to go out. Catching them in the run is easier since there's less space for them to run away. I think if I use treats and the herding method Mrs. K provided I might be able to get them to go in with some practice.

A tarp?
I'd build something solid.
...and you'll need to keep that area shoveled clear of snow.

They should go back to run/coop at dusk, first time you let them out do it just 30 minutes before roosting time....getting them back in there any other time could be a challenge.
